Vancouver Island First Nation Launches Land Claim Against Government

The Nuchalaht First Nation has launched an Aboriginal-title claim against the federal and provincial (British Columbia) governments. The law suit comes after dealing with intensive logging in its traditional territory as well as years frustrating negotiations with the government.
The Nuchalaht is a small group (around 150 members) on Vancouver Island. Yet, they've been empowered by a precedent-setting Aboriginal-title claim Supreme Court case in 2014. In that case, the court ruled unanimously in favour Tsilhqot’in.
Jack Woodward, who is representing the Nuchalaht, says this might be the first title claim on the West Coast since then, and that there are six others occurring in BC.
